Rei, at the Gilberts

About

Rei is an iMac to come under my care. When Dave decided to purchase his third Mac of 2006, an iMac (24-inch Mid-2007), in August, he no longer had any use for Rei. Through an agreement of me essentially providing food support for the apartment, Rei was brought to my desk where she now resides.

Rei is the first iMac that I have personally owned since the iMac line was conceived a decade ago. The iMac has gone through 4 major system overhauls (iMac G3iMac G4iMac G5, iMac Intel-based), with a 2nd iMac Intel-based generation – the Aluminum iMacs – now superseding Rei’s model.

The name Rei is based on the character Hino Rei (火野 レイ), aka Sailor Mars, from the Japanese manga and anime 美少女戦士セーラームーン (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon). For those who know me, they might also think it would be with my later character obsession Ayanami Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion. While close, it should be noted that Ayanami Rei was actually named after Hino Rei.

Rei is currently in the service of Pearl, being her first entry into the Intel platform Macs. After acquiring Iris (and later Anri), Pearl’s need of an Intel machine to begin learning Aperture and Final Cut Studio outweighed my need for an Intel machine at home to essentially play a server role (see Titania).

Rei has been upgraded to the maximum 3GB of RAM from Crucial. She will likely be with me and Pearl for the foreseeable future.
